Nissan Foundation Celebrates 20 Years of Giving

Nissan

The Nissan Foundation awarded $655,000 in grants today to 26 nonprofit organizations from across the country during a special luncheon commemorating the institution's 20th anniversary. Located in California, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Tennessee and Texas, all of the organizations receiving grants in 2012 demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering cultural diversity in their local communities.

"For 20 years Nissan has been nurturing respect for diversity through the Foundation's sponsorship of educational programs in communities where our employees live and work," said Scott Becker, president of the Nissan Foundation. "Today we are celebrating the value of all those efforts and the positive outcomes made possible by all of our Foundation partners.”

Since 1992, the Nissan Foundation has distributed $6.4 million to more than 100 nonprofit organizations that offer educational programs that foster a greater appreciation and understanding of America's diverse cultural heritage.

Originally founded following a period of civic unrest in Los Angeles as a means to offer resources and support in the Los Angeles community, the Foundation has expanded its geographic reach over the years as Nissan's business operations have grown, including additional communities where the company operates in various regions of the United States.

Many of the nonprofits receiving grants in 2012 are repeat awardees, demonstrating Nissan's dedication to long-lasting and consistent community support.

“Diversity is strength, whether in a company or a community. We see the Foundation as a means to promote respect for others, generate alternative ways of thinking, strengthen self-awareness and enrich community life,” said Becker. “We are proud to partner with this year's grant recipients, and we know they will bring tremendous value to people's lives as they turn their proposals into actions.”

2013 Nissan 370Z - Review

Nissan

Following a familiar trajectory, the latest iteration of the Nissan Z has continually added more technology, more features, and more performance since its re-introduction in 2003 as the 350Z. The current 2013 Nissan 370Z continues the trend, adding a handful of new features to each model variant, while maintaining the core segment-straddling sports car/grand tourer essence.

As a rear-drive, front-mid-engine, 332-horsepower, two-seater, the 370Z seems to fit the sports car mold perfectly, and, behind the wheel, it mostly feels like it, too. But at 3,200-pounds-plus curb weight, and with its potent 3.7-liter V-6, the 370Z blurs the dividing line between sports car and grand tourer, especially with its more luxurious interior and enhanced range of gadgets, features, and options.

Updates for 2013 include a revised front end that incorporates LED daytime running lights, new 18- and 19-inch alloy wheel designs, a revised selection of exterior colors, and more. The higher-performance, more track-focused NISMO 370Z also adds an available Bose six-speaker, six-CD changer audio system; Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity; an auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink transceiver; upgraded brake lines and fluid; a new exterior color, and more. The 370Z Roadster gets the new front end with LED daytime running lights like the Coupe, plus a new 19-inch wheel design for Sport Package-equipped cars, and a few tweaks to the Sport Package's contents.

Features that carry forward from the 2012 Nissan 370Z include a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters or a six-speed manual transmission with Nissan's unique SynchroRev feature, which automatically rev-matches downshifts by computer-controlled throttle blips. While either transmission mates well with the rorty V-6, the manual is the best choice for the enthusiast.

The 370Z is, in general, a car for the enthusiast, however, as its base suspension tune is aggressive--some might call it a touch harsh--and the upgrade Sport and NISMO models sharpen that edge even further. Steering feel is perhaps the main drawback from this enthusiast package, as it's a bit vague, with a tendency to tramline along minor grooves in the road. That said, it's still a fun, competent overall package.

Inside the cabin, the 370Z is far more refined than the 350Z that preceded it, with supportive, comfortable adjustable seats, available leather upholstery, power acecssories, keyless entry/start, and cruise control. Optional extras for even more convenience include navigation, satellite radio with real-time traffic, HID headlights, and more.

Nissan looks towards Facebook fans to design new cars

Facebook-copy-520x245

Automobile giant Nissan reportedly wants to take the help of its followers on social media sites such as Facebook and Pinterest to canvas opinion on its future plans.

Nissan's Director of Interactive and Social Media Marketing, Erich Marx, said that Nissan's nearly one million Facebook followers and a similar number on Google+ and Twitter could be asked to form instant focus groups to which it could ask specific questions of interest.

"We want to take our social media engagement to the next level. We have all these people following us who are obviously interested in what we're doing and where we're going. The next level in that relationship will be to get their input on where we should go," Stufzz.co.nz quoted Marx, as saying.

Nissan first turned to Facebook in February this year, when it asked fans to work on a special performance version of the 370Z sports car and asked them to submit ideas on what they would want in a special edition, from engine performance to suspension tuning. The firm reportedly plans to kick off the next phase of the strategy by asking followers what vehicle and technology choices they expect to see in the next 10 years.

Although there's no suggestion from Nissan that it will share future model plans with its followers, it is, however, expected that some of the ideas discussed via social media are sure to generate discussion behind closed doors and may even drive future developments.

2015 Nissan Z May Be Lighter, Leaner

Nissan

Just the Facts:
  • The 2015 Nissan Z will be lighter, leaner and appeal to a more mainstream audience, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Inside Line in a recent interview.
  • Work on the new Z is "at an early stage," he said, with a concept version of the car in the works.
  • Unveiling of the new Z concept could come as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

LONDON — The 2015 Nissan Z will be lighter, leaner and appeal to a more mainstream audience, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Inside Line in a recent interview.

Work on the new Z is "at an early stage," he said, with a concept version of the car in the works.

Unveiling of the new Z concept could come as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Presumably, a lighter Nissan Z would return better gas mileage than the current version. The 2013 Nissan 370Z returns 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 370Z coupe has a curb weight of 3,314 pounds.

The current 370Z has not enjoyed quite the same success as the 2002 350Z, which revived the Z car reputation and sold well in the U.S., Japan and Europe. "The next one has to have a stronger impact," says Nakamura.

And that won't be achieved by making it bigger. "It cannot be any larger," he says. "It's at its maximum size now and should go leaner." By that he means lighter too, with the new model to feature a down-sized engine, probably a four-cylinder turbo rather than today's 3.7-liter V6. "It needs to be lighter, and more accessible to open the door to more people," he adds.

Nissan must also juggle the product planning implications of this move to a lighter, leaner, downsized Z, because the current car not only shares its FM platform with the conceptually close Infiniti G Coupe, but also the G sedan and the Infiniti FX.

The Alliance tie-up with Daimler may also mean that the next Z can draw on Mercedes hardware, although the German company's higher-cost components may limit the scope for platform-sharing.

Speaking more widely about the Nissan range, Nakamura says that "Excitement, substance and agility" will feature in the design of future models. These new qualities will be combined with the above-average roominess of today's models, a task Nakamura admits will be "quite challenging," although the European-market Qashqai and Juke show the way ahead.

"They are already sporty, and have a nice stance. Over the next few years Nissans will have a more consistent look," he adds, explaining that such "a diversified range, from Micra to Titan, is in some ways a strength, but also a challenge."

Inside Line says: Nissan will have a challenge maintaining the continuity of the heavier, more brutal Zs of the past with the next lighter, leaner iteration.
