LA Auto Show: Nissan Shows Off 2013 Sentra and Lineup Refresh

Nissan1

The next twelve months will be huge for Nissan, as they introduce two new vehicles and begin to sell the all-new 2013 Nissan Sentra shown here at the LA Auto Show. In this video, Nissan of North America Chief Marketing Manager Fred DePerez discusses all that and more with autoMedia.

Like most automakers, Nissan is going through intense change. The year 2012 saw the debuts of three brand new vehicles in the Altima, Pathfinder and now Sentra. The look of all three cars has been refreshed and updated with the times, each sporting a flowing and curvaceous design that portrays a more athletic stance.

You have to make cars that are dynamic these days, in the era of the sharp-looking and affordable Hyundai lineup that has led to surging sales for the Korean automaker. Competitors like Nissan are now catching up, and the 2013 Sentra is a great example.

Now in its seventh generation, the all-new 2013 Nissan Sentra is 150 lbs. lighter than the outgoing model; making it both more efficient and more exciting to drive.

Fuel efficiency is a theme that rings true throughout the Nissan lineup, and will play an important role in the future. After leading the pack with the all-electric Nissan Leaf a few years ago, an updated Leaf is expected in 2013 to compete with a growing EV market. Nissan wants to maintain their reputation as an EV leader, and keeping the Leaf ahead of the competition will be key in that effort.

Electric cars aren’t the only key to efficiency, though. Nissan already meets federal standards that will be enforced in 2016, and designate the achievement with PureDrive branding on many models. It signifies a commitment to producing eco-friendly vehicles that will carry Nissan into a bright future – one on full display at the Los Angeles Auto Show this year.

INSIDE AUTO: Nissan aims next-gen 2013 Pathfinder at 7-passenger family market

Nissanpathfinder

Calistoga, Calif. – As Nissan’s new-generation Pathfinder moves to a unibody construction, it brings to an end the era of body-on-frame sport utes that created the truck-as-car phenomenon in the 1990s.

Nissan moved the Pathfinder to unibody because body-on-frame is dead in the U.S., except for trucks and specialized off-road vehicles. While going to unibody seriously ups the body’s rigidity and often increases weight, the Pathfinder actually got 150 lb. lighter than the previous generation.

With two decades of sport-ute experience to call on, sport-ute buyers know that, whatever the image, whatever the capabilities, the vehicle is expected to drive and function as a car.

Buyers clinics showed Nissan that people wanted the Pathfinder to be bigger inside, with more features and sophisticated middle-American touches. Entertainment, audio, connectivity, luxury touch and feel were the words defining key needs. It also needed to be quieter and more fuel-efficient. It needed to look less like a truck and the inside needed a step up in sophistication.

While always a player in the true off-road sport ute market, Nissan gave that up because the old generation Pathfinder was appealing to a customer base that no longer seemed to exist. Yet it’ll continue to be driven off-road the way the vast majority of drivers who drive on un-paved roads tend to do it.

The Pathfinder will tow up to 5000 lbs., which is probably of interest to those active-lifestyle families that Nissan mentally sees lining up outside their dealerships for the comfortable, quiet Pathfinder. That’s the thing, really. In all the next-gen competition, comfort and features are as important as capability.

The primary client for the Pathfinder is obviously families, and the vehicle’s styling reflects much of this new reality. As most of its competitors had already switched to unibody in their previous generation, the one advantage Nissan got out of being the last of the dinosaurs was to be able to take a good look at what was liked, needed, wanted or worshiped so they could include it on their next-generation model.

All that’s clear when you view the Pathfinder, as it has a kinder, gentler look. It also has eight cubic feet more interior space than the previous model, in a vehicle that's four inches wider and three inches lower, with a two-inch longer wheelbase.

It’s also still a three-row seater, with the second row sliding fore and aft depending on the needs of those in the third row. The backs recline, and these two attributes mean a significant increase in second-row comfort, particularly when you add in that they’re heated. That’s true in front, and they’re also cooled as well.

There’s a neat “latch and glide” system that allows the second row to be moved for access to the rear row without removing existing baby seats — a serous selling point for multi-kid families.

The optional all-around cameras are of decent value for those who tow, drive in tight places or wish to demonstrate their small-parking-space skills. This camera system can also operate looking forward up to five mph for cresting hills and other neat stuff.

The power for all this fun is Nissan’s 3.5-liter V6, a well-regarded engine that produces 260 hp. and 240 lb.-ft. of peak torque on regular gasoline. It’s plenty for the Pathfinder. That power comes with both smoothness and distant sound. The cabin remains calm and quiet during most driving operations.

The power gets to the wheels through a chain-driven continuously variable transmission that was developed knowing it would be used in the Pathfinder as well as other vehicles. It’s both quiet and accurate, with downshifting capabilities that make it work for this vehicle. It has a tow mode and downhill speed control capability that makes towing with the Pathfinder smoother and safer.

The all-wheel drive features a “four-high” lock that keeps the all-wheel drive driving all the wheels. There’s no “low-range,” which is why Nissan will tell you the Pathfinder is no longer a rock-crawler.

Fuel efficiency is decent, with the front-wheel drive version sporting a rating of 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, for a 22 mpg combined score. The all-wheel drive costs you a single mile per gallon in those numbers.

The engine for the Pathfinder is built in Tennessee, which is where the vehicle is assembled as well. It’s already on sale. Suggested prices run from $28,270 for the front-wheel drive Pathfinder S model to $40,770 for the all-wheel drive Platinum model.

At just over $30,000 for a seven-passenger vehicle, there’s a lot of value for the larger family that needs this much space. There’s no difference in the driving, handling or capability of the various Pathfinder trim levels, but there’s certainly a different look and feel to the top models.

The “got-everything” model has the feel of a luxury-level crossover. There’s a long list of “stuff” to play with, and the touch of surfaces inside and the design of the interior is up to grade. Nissan’s done a good job of differentiating the same vehicle into really different categories in the full-sized crossover segment.

2014 Nissan GT-R Preview: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show

Nissan2

Few other automakers spend as much time, money and effort in honing their range-topping sports cars as Nissan devotes to the GT-R. Proof of that was seen in May of 2012, when the automaker entered a near-stock GT-R in the Nürburgring 24 Hour race, finishing first in class and 30th overall.

As customers the world over have learned, the Nissan GT-R is a supercar with a remarkably broad range of talents. It can be tracked on the weekend, often besting rivals that sticker for twice as much money, then comfortably driven to work, in bumper-to bumper traffic, on Monday morning.

Despite significant revisions for the 2013 model year, the Nissan GT-R sees further updates and improvements for 2014, including changes to its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine to further boost driveability.

Though output remains fixed at 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque, new fuel injectors give the 2014 GT-R improved throttle response between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm, and a new oil pan baffle helps maintain oil pressure under high g-force cornering.

Each VR38DETT engine is still assembled by hand in a dedicated clean room, and engines will now carry an aluminum plaque bearing the name of the craftsman that built it. As in previous years, shifting is handled exclusively by a sequential 6-speed dual-clutch transaxle.

The chassis has been improved for 2014 as well, with a focus on improving high-speed handling. Up front, the suspension link bushing location has been moved, and a new roll bar reduces the front roll-center height. New dampers and springs help lower the car’s center of gravity, and front suspension alignment adjustment has been simplified.

Outside, 2014 models carry on unchanged in both Premium and Black Edition variants. Inside, there’s a renewed focus on “takumi,” a Japanese word that translates to artisan. Reflecting this, Premium models get new interior colors and stitching for a more upscale feel.

Black Edition models now get a steering wheel with red accents for more of a sporting feel, but the big news is the availability of a limited-production Premium Interior Package. This adds Red-Amber semi-aniline leather, with hand stitching on the seats and Red Amber accents on the instrument panel, steering wheel, door trim, armrests and shift knob.

The 2014 Nissan GT-R will hit dealers in January of 2013, in Premium and Black Edition trims. Options are limited to the previously mentioned Premium Interior Package, and a Cold Weather Package that includes Dunlop all-season tires and a unique coolant mix for cold climates.

We’ll bring you live shots of the 2014 Nissan GT-R as part of our complete 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show coverage.

New Nissan Leaf is cheaper, runs farther on single charge

Nissan

The upgraded Nissan Motor Co. Leaf electric car can travel further without recharging, comes in a cheaper model and tells drivers how much battery life is left.

The changes in the revamped model, shown Tuesday at a Tokyo hotel, were based on feedback from owners whose chief worry was running out of electric juice while driving, Nissan officials said.

Electric cars emit no pollution, but they need to be recharged. Owners have charging equipment installed at home. But the scarcity of recharging stations on the roads has limited electric vehicles use to short commutes and kept zero-emission cars confined to a market niche.

The new model can travel 228 kilometers (142 miles) on a single charge, up from 200 kilometers (124 miles) as long as you don't use air conditioning, because of improvements such as streamlining the battery system and the vehicle's lighter weight, according to Nissan.

It sells for less than 2.5 million yen ($31,000) in Japan when stripped of fancy options and adding government green subsidies - more affordable than the cheapest previous model at just below 3 million yen ($37,000).

Nissan did not detail overseas sales plans but said similar upgrades were in the works.

The Leaf is the world's most popular electric vehicle, comprising more than half of all electric car sales. Leaf global sales since late 2010 total 43,000 vehicles, about half of them in Japan.

More than 17,000 Leaf cars have been sold in the U.S. and monthly sales are recently at about 1,500 vehicles, according to Nissan.

Senior Vice President Masaaki Nishizawa told reporters the Leaf does away with the hassles of going to gas stations and allows drivers a cleaner conscience.

"People who try out the Leaf are moved," he said. "But they are worried about cruise range."

When the Leaf first went on sale, recharging facilities were at 200 Nissan dealerships in Japan. That will grow to 700 Nissan dealers later this year, or 1,200 locations, when including other spots such as convenience stores.

Among other changes to the Leaf:

- Roomier luggage space after the recharging mechanism became smaller and was moved to the front.

- A dashboard display that tells how much battery charge is left.

- A navigation system that calculates the best energy-saving route to your destination.

- A smaller lighter recharging nozzle.

- Reduction of rare-earth use by 40 percent for the electric motor.

Global Nissan Leaf Sales Cross 42,700

Nissan

Nissan worldwide Leaf sales continue to move up, recently reaching 42,700, according to Autoblog Green.

While global sales of the electric vehicles have been solid, US sales have been bumpy, but have also edged upward.

The Japanese carmaker sold 1,579 units of the zero-emission vehicle in October, a significant 76% increase from one year before in October, 2011.

In an effort to gain more branding awareness of the Leaf, Nissan recently started a global campaign to boost sales further:

“The Japanese automaker is looking to boost Leaf sales and, late last month, unveiled its first global ad campaign. Nissan pitched features such as being able to use the car as a back-up power supply for homes in addition to the no-pollution, no-gas angle.”

HURRICANE SANDY: SAFETY TIPS

Sandy3

When the Storm Strikes

  • · If you are traveling, find safe shelter immediately.
  • · Have a plan for those with special needs, children, the elderly and pets.
  • · Monitor local media reports and follow emergency instructions and orders from authorities.

If you are at home or at work:

  • · If you have been ordered to evacuate, do so. If not, stay put in a well-constructed building.
  • · Continue to listen to local radio, television reports or NOAA Weather Radio for latest information on the storm’s progress and for bulletins from emergency officials.
  • · Turn refrigerator to maximum cold and open only when necessary. · Turn off utilities if told to do so by authorities.
  • · Turn off propane tanks.
  • · Unplug small appliances.
  • · Fill large containers with water.

If winds become strong:

  • · Stay away from windows and doors even if they are covered. Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway.
  • · Close all interior doors. Secure and brace external doors.
  • · If you are in a two-story house, go to an interior first-floor room, such as a bathroom or closet.
  • · If you are in a multiple-story building and away from the water, go to the first or second floors and take refuge in the halls or other interior rooms away from the windows.
  • · Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object. · Remain indoors during a hurricane or coastal storm. Don’t be fooled by the "eye" or the lull that occurs as the storm center moves overhead. The other side of the hurricane "eye" has winds that will rapidly increase and will come from the opposite direction.
  • _ Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
  • _ When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
  • _ Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • _ If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • _ Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
  • _ Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
  • _ Because standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S. For more information on flood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance ProgramWeb site at www.FloodSmart.gov.

• Treat every downed wire as if it is a live electrical wire. Do not assume the wire may be
cable or phone. Do not approach, touch or move any downed wire. Call 911

immediately.

• Widespread power outages are expected. To report a power outage contact National Grid at 1-800-876-5222

• Stay clear of flooded areas. Do not drive through flooded streets as it is difficult to judge the force and depth of the water.

• Roadways may become blocked by downed branches and trees. Choose alternative

routes. Contact 518-587-3550 ext 2910 to report downed trees in roadways. If there is

no answer, you may contact the Police Department at 518-584-1800.

If You Are Ordered To Evacuate

  • · Follow the instructions and advice of local government officials. If you are advised to evacuate, do so promptly.
  • · If you are advised to go to a certain location, go there. Don’t go anywhere else.
  • · If certain travel routes are advised, use those routes rather than trying to find short cuts.
  • · If you are told to shut off water, gas or electrical service to your home before leaving, do so.
  • · Before you leave, secure your home. Bring inside or secure loose items. Shutter windows and doors securely. Turn off electricity at main switch and the gas at each appliance.
  • · Leave as soon as officials instruct that you do to avoid being marooned on flooded highways.
  • · Make certain you have enough fuel for your car.
  • · As you travel, keep listening to the radio for additional instructions.
  • · Watch for washed?out roads, earth slides, broken water or sewer mains, loose or downed electrical wires and falling or fallen objects.
  • · Don’t try to cross a stream or pool of water unless you are certain that the water will not be over your knees, or above the middle of your car’s wheels, all the way across. If you do decide it is safe to cross, put your car in low gear and drive very slowly to avoid splashing water into your engine and causing it to stop. Also, remember that your brakes may not work well after the car has been in deep water. Try them out a few times when you reach the other side.

If High Wind Occurs

  • · Garage doors are frequently the first feature in a home to fail. Reinforce all garage doors so that they are able to withstand high winds.
  • · If you do not live in an evacuation zone or a mobile home, designate an interior room with no windows or external doors as a "Safe Room."
  • · Most mobile / manufactured homes are not built to withstand hurricane force winds. Residents of homes not meeting that level of safety should relocate to a nearby safer structure once local officials issue a hurricane evacuation order for their community.
  • · Once a hurricane warning is issued, install your window shutters or plywood panels.
  • · When a hurricane warning is issued for your community, secure or bring inside all lawn furniture and other outside objects that could become a projectile in high winds.
  • · Listen to local radio and television broadcasts for safety instructions from local officials, and go to your designated "Safe Room" when directed to do so.
  • · Do not leave your "Safe Room" until directed to do so by local officials, even if it appears that the winds calmed. Remember that there is little to no wind in the eye of a hurricane.

If Inland Flooding Occurs

  • · In high flood-prone areas, keep materials on hand like sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, plastic garbage bags, lumber, shovels, work boots and gloves.
  • · Be aware of streams, drainage channels and areas known to flood, so you or your evacuation routes are not cut off. If you choose or are told to evacuate, move to a safe area before access is cut off by flood water.
  • · Monitor local radio / television broadcasts or NOAA Weather Radio to learn of the storm’s progress and for information from emergency officials.
  • · Avoid driving into water of unknown depth. Moving water can quickly sweep your vehicle away.
  • · Restrict children from playing in flooded areas.
  • · After a flood, you should test drinking water for potability and wells should be pumped out and the water tested before drinking.
  • · Do not use fresh food that has come in contact with floodwaters. Wash canned goods that come in contact with floodwaters with soap and hot water.
  • · Stay away from downed power lines.
  • In Case of Power Outage
  • · Turn off major appliances to prevent damage from a possible surge when the power comes back on - keep one light turned on so you know when power returns.
  • · Call your utility provider to notify them of the outage.
  • · Check to see if your neighbors have power.
  • · Use only flashlights for emergency lighting -- candles pose the risk of fire.
  • · Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors shut to keep food from spoiling. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • · Do not use a charcoal grill indoors and do not use a gas stove for heat - they could give off harmful levels of carbon monoxide.
  • · In cold weather, stay warm by dressing in layers and minimizing time spent outdoors. Be aware of cold stress symptoms (i.e., hypothermia) and seek proper medical attention if symptoms appear.
  • · If you are in a tall building, take the stairs and move to the lowest level of the building.
  • · If trapped in an elevator, wait for assistance. Do not attempt to force the doors open. Remain patient - there is plenty of air and the interior of the elevator is designed for passenger safety.
  • · Remember to provide fresh, cool water for your pets.
  • · Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion and dangerous driving conditions. If you must drive during a blackout, remember to obey the 4-way stop rule at intersections with non-functioning traffic signals.
  • · Remember that equipment such as automated teller machines (ATMs) and elevators may not be working.

Supplies to Stock up on

  • _Water-at least a 3-day supply one gallon per person per day
  • _ Food-at least a 3-day supply of nonperishable, easy-to-prepare food
  • _ Flashlight
  • _ Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAAWeather Radio, if possible)

  • _ Camera for photos of damage

After the Storm

  • _Return home only when officials have declared the area safe.
  • _ Before entering your home, look outside for loose power lines, damaged gas lines, foundation cracks or other damage.
  • _ Parts of your home may be collapsed or damaged. Approach entrances carefully. See if porch roofs and overhangs have all their supports.
  • _ Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes that may have come into your home with the floodwater.
  • _ If you smell natural or propane gas or hear a hissing noise, leave immediately and call the fire department.
  • _ If power lines are down outside your home, do not step in puddles or standing water.
  • _ Keep children and pets away from hazardous sites and floodwater.
  • _ Materials such as cleaning products, paint, batteries, contaminated fuel and damaged fuel containers are hazardous. Check with local authorities for assistance with disposal to avoid risk.
  • _ During cleanup, wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and rubber boots.
  • _ Make sure your food and water are safe. Discard items that have come in contact with floodwater, including canned goods, water bottles, plastic utensils and baby bottle nipples. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • _ Do not use water that could be
  • contaminated to wash dishes, brush teeth,
  • prepare food, wash hands, make ice or
  • make baby formula.
  • _ Contact your local or state public health department for specific recommendations for boiling or treating water in your area after a disaster as water may be contaminated.

To help reduce the potential of an accident happening caused by pedal misapplication, Nissan has developed an ‘Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication’ function for its vehicles.

The new technology will debut in the updated Nissan Elgrand MPV by the end of the year, aimed at reducing acceleration accidents in parking lots and other spaces where the vehicle could potentially collide with walls if the driver mistakenly pushes the wrong pedal.

By utilizing the four cameras of the Around View Monitor and ultrasonic sonar, the technology will detect if the vehicle is in a parking spot or any confined space and if there are any obstacles in the way of the vehicle. It will automatically control the acceleration if necessary, even applying the brakes before a collision can occur.

The new technology is part of the Japanese automaker’s ‘Vision Zero’ safety goal which aims to help eliminate deaths and serious injuries due to traffic accidents.

Nissan Quest is a Luxurious Family Hauler

Nissanquest

The 2012 Nissan Quest is arguably the most luxurious minivan on the market.

It is also very versatile, capable, fun and attractive, providing what Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. calls “unrivaled family mobility.”

That’s not just marketing hype; this vehicle truly lives up to its billing. We — husband, two grandchildren, sister-in-law and I — put that to the test on a recent 10-day road trip, totaling more than 2,400 miles, including mountains, two beaches and lots of shopping.

The Quest LE we tested was the top model of four. Prices range from $25,990 for the base S model to $42,350 for the LE.

Under the hood of all models is a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which produces 260 horsepower and 240 foot-pounds of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and the engine is connected to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

We had plenty of power for merging, overtaking and climbing the mountain grades, even with the vehicle loaded to the max with people and enough stuff for a week at the beach.

EPA ratings are 19 mpg city/24 highway. Fully loaded, but with mostly highway driving, we averaged just 19.5 mpg.

We didn’t take a boat with us, but the Quest is capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds with an optional towing package.

Everyone was comfortable, thanks to such amenities as the multi-adjustable heated front seats, reclining second-row captain seats that fold and slide forward for easy third row entry; folding/reclining (60/40) third-row bench seat; and separate air vents/reading lights/assist handles for each seat.

There also were plenty of cupholders and more-than-adequate headroom and legroom, even for the long-legged boy — 42.1/43.8 inches in the front, 41.6/36.7 inches in the second row. I didn’t check the third row, but I heard no complaining from the passengers back there.

The conversation (“spy on the kids”) mirror didn’t help much in seeing all the way back to the third row, but did give a good view to the driver and front passenger of anyone in the middle seats.

Nissan's Snug Kids™ Celebrates a Decade of Helping Secure the Safety of Children

Nissan

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Nissan kicks off Child Passenger Safety Week by celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Snug Kids™ program, the automotive industry's first child safety seat fit initiative. Since 2002, Nissan has provided parents and caregivers with peace of mind by offering valuable tools and resources to help determine which child safety seats fit properly in Nissan and Infiniti vehicles, as well as tips on how to achieve a secure fit when installing a rear or forward-facing child seat or booster.

"Ten years ago Nissan made child passenger safety a priority and pioneered the Snug Kids™ program to help parents ensure the safety of their most precious cargo," said Bob Yakushi, director of product safety, Nissan North America. "We are proud to be the only automaker who offers a comprehensive seat fit guide for all of our products with a back seat."

To celebrate its decade-long commitment to safety and to help arm Nashville-area residents with the tools needed to install child-restraint systems properly, the automakers will have certified technicians onsite at its Franklin headquarters to inspect child car seats and offer step-by-step instruction on proper installation. This event is open to the public. Parents or caregivers wanting to have their seats checked should visit Nissan at 1 Nissan Way, Franklin, Tenn., between 1-3 p.m. Oct. 5.

Knowing how to properly secure a child in a correct-fitting child safety seat is one of the most important things that parents can do to help protect their children in a vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages 1–12. However, the use of a child-restraint system has been shown to reduce fatalities by 71 percent in infants and 54 percent in toddlers, which makes finding the right child-restraint system a vital part of protecting child passengers.

Also during the first week of October, Nissan will host a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) course at its training center in Cool Springs, Tenn., for area first responders. During the four-day course, firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) will learn about crash dynamics, injury prevention strategies, and child-restraint selection and installation. Participants who complete the training will receive national certification and will be able to offer seat-check days to residents in their own communities.

During the past 10 years, Nissan's safety engineers have dedicated thousands of hours to evaluating hundreds of child-restraint systems by installing them in the rear seats of Nissan and Infiniti products. The results are published in a comprehensive child safety seat fit guide for parents and caregivers. Nissan's process for evaluating the compatibility of child-restraints in vehicles has been recognized as an industry leader and in 2011, the automaker announced its planned participation in the Vehicle-CRS Fit Program, a future initiative proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Much like Snug Kids™, NHTSA's program would be aimed at helping consumers choose child-restraint systems that properly fit their vehicles and would encourage other vehicle manufacturers to voluntarily assess and recommend at least three current child-restraint models in each category (rear-facing, front-facing and booster) for use in current vehicle models. The agency would then publish the listings at safercar.gov.

More information about Snug Kids™, upcoming events, or a download of the Child Safety Seat Fit Guide, can be found online at nissanusa.com/snugkids

2014 Nissan GT-R Spy Shots

Nissan

Even though Nissan introduced a significantly updated GT-R for 2013, the Japanese automaker is thought to be working on a slew of new upgrades for the 2014 model year, some of which may include styling updates. A prototype for the 2014 Nissan GT-R has now been spotted for the first time, with engineers seen pushing the car hard at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

Continual evolution of the GT-R platform is one of the stated goals of the car's chief engineer, Kazutoshi Mizuno, which is why we’ve seen it getting faster and more refined with each model year. Note, Mizuno recently retired due to Nissan’s mandatory retirement age of 60, though the expert engineer is expected to still influence future GT-R development through a consulting role.

You may recall that Nissan recently entered a stock GT-R in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, an endurance race in which the car emerged a winner in its class and 30th overall. As Mizuno previously explained, the purpose of competing was to test reliability and durability issues in order to fine tune the platform over the next five years or so.

Few details are known about the 2014 Nissan GT-R, though there’s speculation coming out of Japan that the car will feature revised bumpers with more cooling ducts, as well as more power on tap. Other changes such as revised light graphics, new wheel patterns and a tweaked interior are also expected to make the cut.

Of most interest is the possibility of a high-performance ‘RS’ version, something that has been hinted at by Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer. He described Nissan's RS cars as being much more track-focused than regular models.

The prototype seen here is likely to be in the very early stages of development, and is still wearing most of the parts from the current 2013 model. Engineers are likely to be testing the latest mechanicals as well as tire specs. Power is likely to be up, though don't expect huge gains over the 2013 model's 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque.

As Nissan has only just started real world testing of its 2014 GT-R, we’re not expecting a reveal until sometime next year.

  • On sale at Nissan dealers nationwide this fall

DALLAS - Nissan's all-new 2013 Sentra, unveiled here today, continues the brand's product onslaught as the third of five all-new vehicles being introduced in a 15-month period.

Like the recently unveiled Nissan Altima and Pathfinder, the redesign of Sentra focuses on class-above design standards inside and out, as well as efficiency in engineering.  The new Sentra is 150 pounds - or five percent - lighter than the outgoing model, yet has slightly larger overall dimensions and more interior room.  The lighter and more aerodynamic new Sentra allows Nissan to use a more fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine, which along with the next generation Xtronic CVT® with sub-planetary gear helps deliver a 13 percent improvement in EPA combined fuel economy.

With the FE+ models, Sentra achieves up to 40 mpg on the highway.  Other CVT-equipped models are rated at 39 mpg on the highway.  All CVT models achieve a best-in-class* EPA rated 34 mpg combined (City and Highway).

"The 2013 Nissan Sentra is the most revolutionary design in the nameplate's 30-year history, a worthy addition to what is without question the most innovative, highest quality, highest value sedan lineup in Nissan history," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc.  "With the complete redesign for 2013, Sentra is closer in look and feel to Altima than a typical compact sedan.  Like Altima, the new Sentra offers best-in-segment attributes, such as high fuel economy and easy-to-use connectivity, that offer real customer value and convenience."

The new Sentra has a strong family resemblance to the recently introduced 2013 Nissan Altima, both in exterior and interior styling cues and its "class-above style" against competitive vehicles in the compact sedan segment.

Modern, Premium Design
Sentra's all-new design is elegant, modern and refined, reflecting a "professional" character targeted at upwardly bound buyers who aspire to drive something more premium than some of the other designs in the segment.  It adopts Nissan's bold new signature trapezoid-shaped grille and large wraparound headlights with LED accents - the only sedan in the compact segment to offer them as standard equipment.  In the rear, LED taillights are also standard, which complements the sophisticated styling.

Compared to the previous design, Sentra's beltline has been lowered and a new character line has been added that runs from the front fenders, along the sides, and finishes at the sculpted taillights and trunklid, giving the new Sentra a more aggressive stance and enhanced outward visibility for passengers.  Other exterior features include chrome door handles and accents, available heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, and available sport front and rear fascias and rear spoiler.

The 2013 Sentra is built on a new platform that is lighter than the previous design, contributing to the new model's more than 150-pound weight reduction.  It also helps Sentra provide one of the largest interior volumes in class, along with ample rear seat legroom and enhanced trunk capacity.

Compared with the previous generation Sentra, the 2013 model offers a 0.6-inch longer wheelbase (106.3 inches) and a 2.3-inch longer overall length (182.1 inches).  The front overhang is shorter and the rear overhang extended.  It is slightly lower in height (-0.6 inches) and narrower in width (-1.2 inches) for enhanced aerodynamics, yet offers nearly identical total interior volume (111.0 cubic feet versus the previous 110.8).  The coefficient of drag has been significantly reduced to 0.29 from the previous 0.34.

"Sentra has long been known as one of the roomiest sedans in class and the latest iteration is no exception.  The fine-tuning of its dimensions has created not only extremely well-balanced exterior proportions but enhanced rear seat legroom and created a larger, more usable trunk space," said Castignetti.

A Premium, Class-Above Interior
Sentra's sophisticated new look continues inside with a high-quality interior design with materials not usually found in compact vehicles, including soft-touch instrument panel and driver's door armrest, available leather-appointed seating and available Maple wood-tone trim.  Along with offering mid-size roominess in a compact-size exterior, the intuitive interior layout emphasizes driver control and class-leading seat comfort for all occupants.  The inument panel curves out towards the doors and features Fine Vision electroluminescent gauges that are backlit even in daylight, providing a high-quality look that is also easy to read.

Rear seat legroom of 37.4 inches is among the largest in class and immediately apparent to occupants, even with the front seats in the rear-most position.  The rear seat is a standard 60/40 split folding design, offering versatile access to the 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space (2.0 cubic feet larger than the 2012 Sentra trunk).

Standard interior features include 6-way manual driver's seat, 4-way manual front passenger's seat, front and rear door pockets, front center console with padded armrest and cupholders, rear seat armrest with cupholders, air conditioning with in-cabin microfilter, tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows with driver's one-touch auto up/down with auto reverse, power door locks with auto-locking feature, two auxiliary 12-volt power outlets, remote keyless entry and remote trunk and fuel-filler door releases.
A new Dual Zone Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system is offered for the first time with Sentra, allowing the driver or front passengers to set their own individual temperature settings.

The standard audio system is an AM/FM/CD system with four speakers.  Other available systems include a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD system with 4.3-inch color display, USB connection for iPod® and other compatible devices; and a Bose® Premium audio system with eight speakers and an amplifier that has been specially tuned to either the cloth or leather interior for best performance.

Also available is SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately) and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System.

"Nowhere is the new Sentra's ‘class-above' style more evident than in the interior.  You notice it the minute you sit in the roomy, comfortable seats and when you touch the high quality materials.  And when driving you notice the extra attention paid to isolating noise, vibration and harshness from entering the cabin," said Castignetti.  "And that's before you even get into the various advanced technology features that you usually don't expect in a compact sedan segment vehicle."

NissanConnect with Navigation and Other Clever Technology
Like the new Altima, the 2013 Sentra offers a major step forward in technology that helps owners stay connected.  An all-new version of the Nissan Navigation system is available.  NissanConnect with Navigation includes a Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant that reads incoming text messages and allows drivers to reply without taking their hands off of the steering wheel.

The system also offers Pandora® radio capability, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth® and a large 5.8-inch touch-screen display.  The Navigation System includes NavTraffic and NavWeather functions (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), along with POIs powered by Google™ and Google™ Send-to-Car functions.  The Navigation's map views now features warnings for curves and speed limit information.

Other available technology ranges from the RearView Monitor and Nissan Intelligent Key® with illuminated push-button ignition switch to the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with Easy Fill Tire Alert feature.  If air is being added or removed from a tire, the system signals the user when the recommended tire pressure has been reached by sounding the horn.

New 1.8-liter Engine and Advanced CVT
As expected from a ground-up redesign, the new Sentra features an all-new engine and CVT transmission.  Now displacing 1.8-liters, Sentra's advanced DOHC 4-cylinder engine offers a longer stroke than typical engines in its class, resulting in improved combustion speed and efficiency.  The engine is equipped with a twin Continuously Variable Timing Control (CVTC) system which modulates both the intake and exhaust valve opening time (similar to that used on the flagship Nissan Maxima).

The engine's internal friction has been reduced, improving efficiency.  The DLC creates about half the friction of previous coatings.  In addition, the valve springs are shaped similar to a beehive, with a smaller diameter towards the top - reducing inertia weight, improving valvetrain efficiency and smoothing engine operation.  The engine is rated at 130 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque.

The new engine is matched with a new-generation Xtronic CVT® (a 6-speed manual is available in the base Sentra S model).  The new CVT features a host of enhancements (versus the previous CVT) that contribute to an improvement in fuel efficiency and lower vehicle weight.  It also offers a wider gear ratio of 7.3:1 through use of a sub-planetary gear and smaller pulleys, resulting in high-speed fuel efficiency at low rpm and responsive acceleration.  Fuel economy is rated at 30 miles per gallon City, 39 miles per gallon Highway and a class-leading 34 miles per gallon combined with the CVT*.

"In the race for fuel economy bragging rights sometimes what gets lost in the mix is drivability.  Sentra's new engine and advanced CVT design are perfectly matched to provide the best of both mpg and driving enjoyment - smooth, quiet and efficient operation around town or highway cruising, responsive acceleration and excellent mpg and driving range," said Castignetti.

The new Sentra also features an independent strut front suspension with stabilizer bar, torsion beam rear axle with integrated stabilizer bar, power-assisted vented front disc/rear drum braking system (4-wheel disc brakes are available), and vehicle-speed-sensitive electric power steering.  Available wheels and tires include 16-inch steel wheels with full covers with 205/55R16 size all-season tires or 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 205/50R17 all-season tires.

In addition to the Sentra S model's long list of standard features, Sentra SV models add cruise control, two additional speakers, illuminated steering wheel audio controls, vehicle security system and premium cloth seating and door trim.

The Sentra SR adds a sportier appearance, starting with 17-inch forked 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, sport front and rear fascias, sport front grille, lower body side sill extensions, rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light, fog lights and chrome exhaust tip finisher.  Inside, the Sentra SR includes sport silver interior trim, premium sport cloth seats and driver's seatback pocket.

The top-of-the-line Sentra SL adds 17-inch split 7-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, Smart Auto headlights, fog lights, heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, Nissan Intelligent Key®, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, 6-speaker audio system with 4.3-inch display, and Sirius XM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately).

Additional Sentra SL equipment includes leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever knob, Maple wood-tone trim, Dual Zone Automatic Temperature Control (ATC), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with Easy Fill Tire Alert and more.

A Range of Well-Equipped Models
The 2013 Nissan Sentra is offered in a selection of well-equipped S, FE+ S, SV, FE+ SV, SR and SL trim levels.  All models come with standard Xtronic CVT®, except the base Sentra S that is available with a choice of 6-speed manual or CVT.

The NissanConnect with Navigation system, leather-appointed seats, heated front seats, rear disc brakes, power sliding glass moonroof and RearView Monitor are among the additional features available with the various equipment packages.

"From front LED accents to rear LED taillights and every inch in between, the all-new 2013 Sentra serves notice to compact sedan buyers that the Sentra is stepping up in style and stepping up in desirability," said Castignetti.  "In what has become one of the most competitive segments in the industry, Sentra is ready to take on all comers."

Nissan Future Designs Influenced by 2013 Altima, Hi-Cross Concept

Nissan

Though Nissan has relied on CVTs to bring its green quotient up, the Japanese automaker is also counting on design to get its cars sipping less fuel, focusing primarily on cutting vehicle weight, improving aerodynamics, and reducing engine and transmission friction. Along with expected debut dates for each Nissan car, take a look at the automaker’s potential future below.

Nissan Cars

Godzilla may produce offspring, as the report says Nissan is planning an “undetermined” number of GT-R variations to arrive sometime between 2014 and 2016. Before that happens, though, Nissan’s next 370Z will arrive in 2014 as a 2015 model, with a leaner body, and perhaps a smaller front-drive sibling dubbed the Mini Z. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the affordable Versa Hatchback will arrive next spring as a 2013 model with bolder and sportier styling, including a more angular front end and more sharply raked roofline at the rear.

The Maxima will see changes similar to those made to the 2013 Altima, which is lighter and more fuel efficiency than its predecessor. Expect to see the redesigned Maxima in 2014 or 2015. Those who have been waiting for the Nissan Leaf to drop in price may be in luck, as the price will be changed for the better as a result of moving production from Japan to Smyrna, Tennessee. Instead of a redesign, the main focus for the Leaf is extending battery range so green-conscious shoppers can have more confidence in an all-electric car without having to suffer from range anxiety.

Nissan Trucks/SUVs

Just like how families’ needs have changed, so has the Pathfinder. With about two more months to go until it arrives in showrooms, the Pathfinder has softened up its appearance while still maintaining its off-road prowess. Ditching the body-on-frame construction for a unibody structure will help it achieve better fuel economy, with estimates reaching for 20/26 mpg city/highway. Its 3.5-liter V-6 replaces the outgoing SUV’s 4.0-liter, with which it will be paired with an updated CVT. Changes for Nissan’s smaller off-roader, the X-Terra, won’t be as drastic, with a reskin scheduled for 2014. Don’t expect major changes for the Juke either, though a refresh is set for 2014, and the hot-rodded Juke-R continues limited production on a built-to-order basis.

The popular-selling Rogue already has a winning formula, but Nissan hopes to improve it by incorporating styling cues found on the Hi-Cross concept, which debuted at the Geneva show earlier this year, in the new car’s design. Though powertrain specifics haven’t been revealed, it’s possible the revised crossover will use something similar to the concept’s hybrid drivetrain coupled to a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine when it debuts in 2014. The third-generation Murano, on the other hand, will arrive one year later in 2015. New sheetmetal is in store for the Frontier, which is scheduled to arrive in 2014. The new skin, designed with aerodynamics in mind, will help it achieve more mpgs, while production moves to Canton, Mississippi.

As for full-size Titan pickup and Armada SUV, both are on the same schedule, though it’s unclear when we’ll see the new versions. The Titan’s redesign, scheduled for 2014, is being dragged out as a result of the strain put on engineering resources by the 2011 Japan earthquake. Automotive News reports Nissan is considering offering different variations of the full-size truck, including a regular cab body style. That would be a first for Nissan, and offering the truck with a smaller-displacement engine option along the lines of the F-150 EcoBoost is also a possibility.
